It’s Not Just a Dream

By

If Joseph is known for one thing, its his ability to have a dream. While many of us struggle to wrap our mind around one compelling dream, Joseph was faced with two. The first one he had was about sheaves in the field. “Listen to my dream, he said. We were out in the field, tying up bundles of grain. Suddenly my bundle stood up, and you bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine! (Genesis 37:6-7, NLT) The second dream was about stars. “Listen, I have had another dream, he said. The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed low before me!” (Genesis 37:9, NLT)

The dream about the sheaves was symbolic of Joseph’s position and power in relationship to the resources of the earth. The dream about the stars was symbolic of Joseph’s position and power in relationship to the rulers of the earth. But Joseph didn’t realize all of that as he wiped the slumber from his eyes and shared the startling images with his family. In fact, it would be 13 long years before his dreams would be fully understood.

So what does that mean to us today? First, I believe its important for us to recognize that each of us possess a God given purpose. God has created each of us and uniquely gifted us to accomplish eternally significant things for the sake of the Kingdom of God. You may have dreams for your life that you are pursuing…dreams of wealth and success…dreams for your children…dreams for the retirement years…and more! But what are the God given dreams you are carrying? What dreams are you dreaming that will matter 1,000 years from now? Dreams are important. What you dream about is what you will become.

Second, we need to remember that when God reveals his purpose for us to us, though we don’t see it instantly, it is still possible to be sustained by it. Joseph waiting 13 long and painful years before he began to understand what his dreams meant. He suffered at the hands of his brothers and was sold into slavery. He was falsely accused by his master’s wife. He was unjustly imprisoned. Yet the images of his dreams were so powerful he was sustained through the adversity. You can be too. The only real challenge to the dreams God has given comes when you give up and quit.
